Along the NL1 Gros Morne to Port Blandford
The journey along the NL1 was again picturesque including some lovely lakes and bays and lots of trees. Temperature outside at 70 Fahrenheit but firmly 60 in our air-conditioned car. We stopped for petrol at Springfield Junction where the attendant and one of her customers were discussing the fishing - apparently the south bay wasn't very productive but it had been good fishing further up! Dressed in a big souwester the customer was ready to go out for the day (at 10.30).
We continued on past the few towns in this road, we liked the name of the town Badger, but as Drew is driving there is not photo of the welcome to town sign as I missed it!
The next town, a bigger one is called Grand Falls-Windsor, I did manage to take a photo of one of its signs. We liked the message that 'The salmon are fresh every day in Grand Falls-Windsor' but we didn't stop to try, it was still a bit early for lunch.
The next town in the map was Gander, we stopped on the outskirts for lunch at Mary Brown's famous chicken and taters, a Newfoundland chain which prides itself at being better than anywhere else at providing chicken. We both had a Big Mary meal - This involved a piece of fried chicken with a light batter with taters and a side - I had macaroni salad, Drew had a coleslaw. The taters were also fried in a light batter, but were crisp and tasty. This was so not KFC where the chicken doesn't taste like chicken, in this case it was no processed chicken but a real piece of fried chicken in a bun. Now we have done Tim Hortons and Mary Brown's we seem to have covered most of the local brands :-)
We drove on and as we were too early to go straight to Port Blandford we opted to take a scenic detour. Trinity on Bonavista Bay was one of the places mentioned on the road signs. So we left the NL1 at Gambo and drive up the 320 to Trinity passing through Hare Bay. These were three lovely villages and the islands just off the shore made the shoreline distinctive. We stopped in Trinity to spot the web came and then turned around and came back down the 320 and rejoined the NL1.
This took us through Terra Nova national park and on to Port Blandford where we are staying in The Serendipity B&B tonight.
